Emancipated Post Office
A traveling letter-writing initiative connecting the public with incarcerated individuals, affirming dignity and dialogue.
What:
In collaboration with the Emancipated Stories Project, this installation reimagines the post office as a space to have a moment of reflection and connection with someone else’s story. Emancipated Post Office invites passersby to read through the stories of people who have been affected by incarceration, of people who often feel impenetrably separated from the rest of society, and to write meaningful letters in response. The centerpiece of the installation is the optimistic yellow Emancipated Post Office mailbox where people on the “outside” can place their response letters - all of which will be mailed to the original letter writers on the “inside”. This project is also activated by letter readings, musical performances, and panel discussions.
Who:
- - Emancipated Stories Project: Quiara Alegría
- Hudes and Sean Ortiz
- The Fortune Society
- Emmanuel Oni
Purpose:
Emancipated Stories was founded by Quiara Alegría Hudes and her cousin Sean Ortiz during his decade-long incarceration, after the two realized the importance and power of letter-writing as a way of bearing witness and bridging two populations: those inside and those outside. Authors behind bars submit-or, as Hudes puts it, “emancipate”- one page of their life story. Volunteers on the outside respond with handwritten letters, acknowledging the author’s humanity
Impact & Reach:
- - 2500+ visitors
- 1000 emancipated stories
- 200 response letters written
- 11 paid performance artists
- 11 incarcerated authors featured
